NEW is God's NORMAL

“God is so boring.”

I know you have heard someone say that. And if we're real honest, we may have even thought that. Now, as a Christian we might not say, "God is boring." But we might feel that "life is boring." Meaning really the same thing. You know what?  That's on us. That's on me. I do that to myself. I can take an experience like crossing the Red Sea and make it into a mundane part of history to forget. I create a simplified dumbed down God that I can handle. I expect God to follow the same path each time He works. I am the one who makes God boring.

The very essence of salvation, of the Gospel, is a creative, powerful force. The very nature of God is imaginative and irreplaceable. When we first come to Christ, it is all new and exciting.  This amazing God did this amazing thing in our lives.  We expect the unexpected.

But then we develop tools that help us “manage” our relationship with God.  Tools & rules to follow. It doesn’t start off as a bad thing.  It typically begins with a spiritual breakthrough that we then desire greatly to pass on to others. But it is when we try to understand and analyze that process, when we put God’s work through our own filters, that we make God a tiny bit smaller each time.

For example, say we struggled with, fought with and brought an enemy of our souls to our God.  We heard His voice come through in His Word. We found that quoting a particular verse and meditating on it and coming up with various ways to mold that verse’s meaning into our lives brought about a powerful change.  But then we tried to duplicate those results in a completely different situation.  When something bad happens, you say this verse, you pray this prayer, you do this act. It worked last time, right? But maybe this time God wanted us to fast. This struggle required a different path, a different type of victory. But we get so hung up on what we have experienced, and the safety of our own recollections, that we forget how big our God really is.

Do you know how many different ways Jesus healed when He was walking around on the earth?  Spitting in someone’s eyes. Telling someone to just go home. Forgiving a man of sins to fix this guy physically. Laying on a person. Fasting and praying. Telling someone to go to a Priest. One time even requiring two encounters to fully heal a person. Calling out devils by name. And that list didn’t even take a deep study to find.

The point is that God’s work is unique. He does things new all the time. He is a creative, colorful, beyond our comprehension God.

Too often we shut down the work of God in our lives, because He is doing something completely off of our radar. God wants to keep us on our toes, and that’s a good thing.

This blog is a “new” adventure for me and my walk with God. While it might be “old hat” for some, for me it is a new scary place.  One that requires me to hold onto Jesus. And maybe that is the point.

Now for your point of view:

I would love to hear what the word of God says to you. Look at these verses, what do they tell you about your God. What "new" thing really strikes you? If you are willing, feel free to share your ideas below.

Oh, Sing to the Lord a new song.” (Psalm 96:1)

“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.” (Isaiah 65:17)

“I will give you a new heart and a new spirit within you.” (Ezekiel 36:26)

“And put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge, after the image of its creator.” (Colossians 3:10)

“New Name” (Revelation 2:17 & 3:12)

“Behold I make all things new.” (Revelation 21:5)

And my favorite:  Isaiah 43:19, “See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Wait, with eyes wide open, for God to do a new thing in you, in a different place, from the person you least expected Him to work through. Let’s live the adventure that our exciting God wants us to.

Our God is Not Boring!

  1. Isaiah 43:19 was my verse of the day on Jan 1, 2020 and within 2 days, I was done with 2020 wanting to go straight to 2021. Haha. Anyway, it spoke to me then and has become one of my favorite verses. And as I read through the other verses that God does new things I remember that His mercies are new every morning and His faithfulness is great. I also remember the promise that if we seek Him, we will find Him, if we seek with all our heart. Thank you, April, for doing this "new" thing. He will show himself to you in a new way as you follow His leading.

Yes, there are so many other places God's newness and refreshing Spirit shows up - like His mercies being New every morning. Great addition to this list. 😊
